The Cumberland area was originally settled by Scots-Irish immigrants in the 1730s. The early settlers were mainly farmers. Much of the area is still comprised of rich farmland today.
In 1750 Cumberland County was officially created from Lancaster County and named for Cumberland, England. Carlisle and Shippensburg are the oldest towns in the county, each with a unique history all its own. Another notable historic site in Cumberland County is the Middle Spring Presbyterian Church, located near Shippensburg. It was built by original settlers in 1738 and still stands today, one of the oldest houses of worship in central PA.
Today, Cumberland County covers 550 square miles and is home to some 255,000 people. It is also home to several colleges, including the U.S. Army War College.
Cumberland has two military operation facilities as well: the Carlisle Barracks/U.S. Army War College and the Naval Support Station in Mechanicsburg.
