Originally home to the Lenni Lenape Native American tribe, Montgomery County boasts beautiful countryside. William Penn granted the area to Welch Quakers in 1682, but its didn't become a county until 1784. It was named after Richard Montgomery, a Civil War general who died in the Battle of Quebec.
The area has much historical significance. During the Revolutionary War, George Washington camped at Valley Forge for the winter of 1777-1778. The Valley Forge National Historical Park continues to draw visitors from all over the United States. The County was an important area for the Underground Railroad, as many Quakers and other activists living there aided slaves on their journey to freedom.
The Mongomery County tourist site states the following:
Montgomery is the third largest and second wealthiest county in PA. The county was formed in 1784. The land was originally part of Philadelphia County.
