Located in Central PA, Dauphin County is a part of the Harrisburg-Carlisle Metropolitan area. It formed from part of Lancaster County in 1785 and was named after the Dauphin of France. 

Today, the county covers 558 square miles of land and water and is home to almost 300,000 people. 

Besides the state capitol and Hershey chocolate world, the county is also home to Three Mile Island Nuclear Generating Station, the site of the ominous 1979 nuclear core meltdown. The plant is now closed. 

Dauphin County, on the other hand, is very much alive! Dauphincounty.org describes it like this: 

This capital county's 525 square miles and 40 municipalities each have their own local flavor. Situated within a short driving distance of Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Washington , D.C. and New York City, the region contains the best of both worlds-both cosmopolitan chic and down-home country.
