Hershey is an unincorporated community in Dauphin County, PA, that covers about 14.4 square miles of land. It is about 14 miles east of Harrisburg and has a population of around 14,000.  

When you hear “Hershey,” you probably think of one thing: chocolate! And that is what Hershey is best known for. It is the home of the Hershey chocolate factory, founded by Milton Hershey in 1894. 

After he started his chocolate factory in 1894, Milton Hershey founded a town for his company’s workers. He built the homes with modern amenities like electricity, indoor plumbing, and central heating. He also built a public trolley system, a school that offered free education for his employees’ children, and even a free vocational school for underprivileged boys. 

Later, Hershey built an amusement park, community center, zoo, and sports area as well. 

Hershey’s goal for his town was to provide “a perfect American town in a bucolic natural setting, where healthy, right-living, and well-paid workers lived in safe, happy homes.” 

Today, the community still thrives and attracts countless tourists per year.
