The Finger Lakes Region in New York is a beautiful place and home to the 11 lakes from which the region gets its name. These lakes are long and narrow and were formed from over-deepened glacial valleys. The lakes range significantly in size although none exceeded 3.5 miles in width. This area was once home to the Iroquois, a Native American confederacy of numerous tribes. They remained in control of the region until 1779, Sullivan Expedition. This region was the starting place for the 19th-century Christian revival, the Second Great Awakening, and important in the Underground Railroad.
