Penn Yan was founded by Quakers in 1795 and was named after two significant Quaker leaders. It is located on the north end of Keuka Lake. The town started as a small agricultural community but as the town grew industries diversified somewhat. Several mills and factories were built in the mid-1800s and transportation increased with the opening of the Crooked Lane Canal and the Northern Central Railroad in 1833 and 1850 respectively. Today, Penn Yan retains its small-town feel and has a notable arts and culture scene.
