Watkins Glen was founded in 1842 and named after Dr. Samuel Watkins, an early settler. The town's economy in the early days was largely dependent on farming. With the construction of the Chemung Canal (1830-1833), jobs diversified to include trade and commerce. Like many other towns in the area, the natural beauty of the state parks and lakes brought many tourists. During World War II, Watkins Glen was home to a Navy training facility. It is now known for its wineries and vineyards as well as its auto racing track, Watkins Glen International.
