Like many of the towns in this region of New York, Skaneateles was originally home to the Iroquois. French and British fur traders were the first Europeans to live semi-permanently in the area. In 1794, the first permanent settler settled in the area and established both and gristmill and a sawmill. This attracted other settlers to the area. In 1830, Skaneateles was officially formed and was named after Skaneateles Lake. The lake is one of the cleanest in the country and, since the mid-19th century, has been a popular vacation spot for tourists. The town also attracted many wealthy familiars, who built grand homes along the lake. It remains a popular spot for those who love history and natural beauty.
